History of the Lodge

Bear Creek Lodge is conveniently located at the entrance to Mt. Spokane State Park. The property has a spectacular view of the mountain and surrounding area.  The rustic lodge offers rooms and suites that are relaxing, clean, and comfortable.

The Linder family started preparations for the lodge in 1947, and finished in 1952. When completed, the building was the widest single span wood structure west of the Mississippi, and people flocked from around the country to see its unique construction. John and Dorothy Linder operated the lodge until 1978, when failing health began to take a toll on the business.

After their deaths, Gordon and Linda Kirk reopened the lodge. Their improvemensts included the snowtubing hill, campground, and an updated kitchen. Many church groups and local businesses enjoyed retreats at the lodge. It operated successfully as Kirk's Lodge from 1984 until 1996.

In recent years, the lodge has changed hands four times as owner after owner (Resort at Mt. Spokane: 1996 - 1999, Falk's Lodge: 1999 - 2001, and Bear Creek Lodge: 2001 - present) struggled to build a profitable business. The Deal family arrived in November, 2002, left the name as Bear Creek Lodge, and began massive remodeling while trying to repair a somewhat tarnished reputation. Improvements to the lodge are constantly ongoing, and Bear Creek Lodge is regaining its position as "the place to go" for Spokane area residents. The Internet has ushered in a new era for the lodge, and guests have recently visited from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Germany, Mexico and several South American countries.

Bear Creek Lodge is now family owned and operated. Sam, Karen, Michelle and George are constantly in motion, either taking care of guests, or "working on one of Dad's little projects". This phrase has has long since turned into a family joke. If it has not been repaired, modified, or replaced, the project is still on "The List".

Improvements to the Lodge

The lodge's original dormitory style has been replaced with individual rooms and suites, each with its own bathroom. Fifteen rooms are now in service, with a maximum sleeping capacity of forty-six. This configuration has six single rooms, four two bedroom suites, and the top floor Garden Suite. Four of the rooms have Jacuzzi bath tubs, the size of which would best be described as an "intimate two". Please click here to View Rooms.

The rooms do not have telephones or TV, and cell phone service does not reach the bottom of the canyon. This is the place to turn back the clock and get away from some of today's technology. The main floor of the lodge boasts two big stone fireplaces. We urge you to enjoy the relaxing warmth of a wood fire, and suggest playing a board game or bringing a favorite DVD/VHS to watch on one of the two big screen TV's.

One of the biggest improvements to the lodge commenced during the summer of 2003. A large outdoor garden, with seating capacity for up to 300 guests, was added beside the lodge. The area is used for weddings, receptions, reunions, private parties, corporate functions, and small concerts. The spring of 2004 brought new improvements to The Garden: a 1000 sq. ft. wooden deck and upgraded outdoor staircases. Brides can now make a grand entrance on their special day, while the groom awaits by The Wedding Stone. The venue is truly spectacular, and was named one of the area's "Perfect Locations" for weddings by Spokane/CDA Living Magazine (along with The Davenport, Couer d'Alene Resort, and Glover Mansion). The lodge is truly one of the area's premier outdoor facilities. Click here for additional information about Weddings.

Two cross country skiing and snowmobile trails terminate on the property, and provide access to miles of groomed runs in the park during the winter. Upgrades to the campground include more spacious sites and small firepits. Summer activities now include camping, hiking, huckleberry picking, animal viewing, and mountain biking.

Bear Creek Lodge specializes in group events, and offers competitive rates.  Be sure to call (509-238-9114) or send an email to find out what we can do for you or your organization.  Individuals are welcome and may book online, another convenience provided by the new management.
